In their words
How would you describe your ideal next role?
My ideal role would be a hybrid position where I am able to help solve complex problems. I have worn different hats throughout my career, and I am open to different types of roles. I thoroughly enjoy planning, designing, debugging, and building.
How would you describe your professional background?
Right out of college, I became a potter. I utilized common industrial manufacturing processes to produce small runs of durable utilitarian wares such as dinner sets. The challenging part was the volume of marketing involved and I was not interested in how much of my time was dedicated to this side of the business. I transitioned into residential real estate were I juggled client work and renovating homes. I specialized in old homes and educated clients on safety items, properly maintaining their investment, and helping identify and restore antique features of their homes. I continually gravitated toward the preservation/renovation side of the work, but could not shake the negative effect of working within physically hazardous environments every day. On the client work side of real estate, I knew I did not want to fall into the same issue of time-spent marketing, and I saw some severe product issues with realtor digital tooling. So, I decided to make the leap into software and learn how to build things digitally. I joined a cohort and have been having a really great time in this space. I have slowly built the tooling that I was lacking as an realtor, and have continued in the software space since then.
How would you describe your ideal next employer?
Culture matters more than size or industry. I want to work with people who are kind, honest, and realistic. Open communication, acknowledging mistakes(we all make them from time to time), leaving air in the room for questions, and being approachable are some of the biggest green flags I am looking for.
Beyond that, I'd prefer working for a company that prioritizes building/optimizing a product that genuinely improves user's lives.
